I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for leaving the country. I know quite a few did after BN66.

You can visit whenever you wanted with no problems. If you are paranoid I suggest stop in France and train it or use the next ferry lol. BTW after six years the debt can be struck off on your request so don't be so over-dramatic. This is a valid get-out for those who need it.
Surely you'd go via Ireland (land border with NI if really keen) where there are no passport checks for travel to/from UK.

If you are somewhere that there is reciprocal arrangements with eg eu. And that jurisdiction regards non payment of tax debt as a criminal matter e.g. france and Germany and some others the enforcement actio will be taken under that portion of their criminal code.

obviously if you can absent yourself In an appropriate manner and spend the next 6 years or so looking over your shoulder you may ultimately get to the point where it is not enforceable.

We left 3 1/2 years ago - couldn't wait! I intend to take legal advice on my position before the FA 2014 bill receives Royal Assent. Up to now, I have been very honest and up-front with HMRC about my movements / whereabouts.....perhaps a little too honest for my own good.

I saw today that HMRC have a pdf warning against the pitfalls of marketed tax avoidence.
                  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/avoidance/tempted.pdf

But there is no date anywhere on the document.

Anyone know when they first put this out there?

Any joy with Merchant Group / ICS

I'm was with Merchant / ICS for with a EBT arrangement. For the 2009/10 tax year I was advised that there was no DOTAS number. I understand that they requested it from HMRC and were told it wasn't required. Nevertheless HMRC are looking at recovering tax.

I'd like to get in touch with others who also worked for Merchant Group / ICS

I too got a HMRC letter completely out of the blue on Saturday for 2008/2009 and having read through every post on this thread, will be creating my appeal / postponement letter in the morning.

Did anyone else use Merchant Group Ltd / ICS Salary Package??? I have printed off their "we are 100% compliant with all uk tax legislation" email in prep for a call to them tomorrow morning!! Surely if these monies are liable, these companies ( and all others ) should be held accountable somehow?

Also, would love to attend the seminar in London - please count me in (admins: can you can grant me PM rights please??)
