My trusted optuagenarian optician warned against varifocal because of bad peripheral visions.

The optician at high street stores are sales puppets and therefore I don't tend to trust them that much.

I guess at one point I'd have to go through the varifocal route.

You pay for what you get with varifocal lenses. The cheap ones have a very limited field of vision. My myopic prescription (-8.50) requires such a high refractive lens that I need the very super expensive Kryptonite Zircon encrusted spectacle lenses. I wear monthly disposable contact lenses that have long distance corrected in my dominant eye and a weaker one corrected for reading in my other. Problem solved.
