That's what Sony do... what you need is one that can set to region 0

Some DVDs will not play on "region-free" players. Instead of just checking that it's not the wrong region, they check that it's the right region.

Commonest perpetrators of this are Disney DVDs; don't know if that will bother you.

In reality, you only need 2 regions, don't you? So 2 players would be a trouble-free guaranteed solution integrating a partial backup facility.
