Top left of my 'metro' interface I've added a 'Desktop' button - this isn't some 'hack addon' it's allowed by the environment, a ten second job to set up. After boot up I click on this button 99.9% of the time and use a Windows 7 style desktop

Why didn't you just set W8.1 to boot to desktop?

"Metro crap" comes back every time you hit the start button/key - but don't think of that as Metro, just a different start-menu.

I installed it on a VM on an old, low-powered MacBook. I don't hate it. Took me about an hour to get used to it, and a few moments every now and then to Google "how do I do ... in W8".

Yes but as a Mac user you don't expect too much from Windows anyway…..

I'm not a Mac user. That's why I put Windows 8 on my Mac.
