Also, does fibre get full speed immediately? Last time we switched ADSL[2] provider, they initially set it to a low speed and then it crept up over the first few days, allegedly so they could pick the right speed/stability compromise.
Yes of course. Apparently, takes a week or two so I'll wait for a bit.

Hmmm. Asking sky is problematic. Find that, whereas they did a good deal for me, they're advisors are clueless.

I have 60Mb Virgin cable and I generally get around mid 50s.

They are upgrading (for free) to 100Mbs soon, and I think their max is 120Mbs

I was only a nipper but IIRC you could tell how fast a connection you'd got based on what noises it made... didn't it progressively fall back to lower speeds until it could connect?

I think it's 'free' in the sense that their prices are going up and this is a bit of a bribe. Can't find any confirmation of that, but there are certainly price increases pending.

My 30Mb package (which was 20, prior to last years price hikes) hovers around mid 20's for download speeds. It's getting hiked to 50Mb at some point.

I get 14 Mbs from bog-standard broadband. I suppose that's enough for two people to stream HD video at the same time, though I'm not sure we've ever done that. What benefit would even faster broadband give me?

It would ensure that investment continues into new technologies, perhaps with some contractors getting juicy deals from it.

It depends what you use it for - if you're only using it to stream video then next to no additional benefit. If you're using it to regularly send and receive files in the gb/s or back-up your HD to a cloud service on a regular basis, have a household that has people streaming video, consoles downloading game updates, kids playing games online; whilst your trying to back-up your itunes library, it's not only a huge time-saver but prevents WW3 from kicking off too.
