Not walking distance with a 4 year old. Hamley's is on Regent's Street, halfway between Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus. Easiest way is tube from Knightsbridge to Piccadilly Circus and a 5 min walk from there.

Hmmm, what does it say that I can give directions to Hamley's from Harrods without having to google it.....

      Aye. WHS.
Have done that same journey about 5 times so far, Harrods for the missus, Hamley's for the sprog.

Think Hamley's needs a makeover - it's looking a little tired nowadays, but the toys are still good.

How about a rickshaw(sp?) instead? Cost less than a cab and is fun for a kid.

How safe are those things? Been in one and you have cabbies trying to wipe them out.

i told my lad I was taking him to see tony blair in downing street. he put a brave face on it and said it sounded fantastic. when we went past hamleys and he saw all the people dressed in costumes outside, he got tremendously exited asked me if he could go in there instead - 'yeak, ok. as you've been good'

They have seemed fine each time I have been in them, I have never seen any actual stats on it though

About 10 years ago I got in one, pissed as a newt.
                Got chatting to the driver/rider.
Anyway I got the urge to do the pedalling (as you do when you're drunk) and surprisingly he agreed to let me have a go, while he sat in the back.
Took the next corner at some speed and the whole contraption turned over on its side.

No injuries except some minor cuts and bruises and we agreed he would do the remainder of the journey and I would give him a good tip.

I've seen a fair bit of anecdotal stuff about them through some of the cycling forums. Consensus is they aren't always operated by experienced cyclists, nor are they licensed and often not insured. So while you probably will be ok, you are relying more on other road users to stay safe than you would be in a Cab or a Bus. If anything does happen there is no protection. There is a lot of talk around getting them licensed in the same way minicabs are but that seems to be some way off yet.

Would I use one? Probably not.

My weekend plans are somewhat curtailed by having to piss into a 5 liter specimen bottle for 24 hours before dropping it off at the hospital lab for analysis.

Following that it will be dropping kids off at a birthday party on Sat and other than my weekly long run on Sunday nothing else planned.
