I read that to. I'm agreeing with what this he/she says:

Until Scotland is independent we will never get the truth about the finances. As for the oil .. anything within the 200 nautical mile Exclusive economic zone rightly belongs to Scotland. That's according to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

And you wonder why we're always complaining?

      - since 1980/81 Scotland has contributed £222 billion more in tax revenues than if it had just matched the per capita contributions of the UK.

The data is all available at Full Fact | Promoting accuracy in public debate - without prejudice

Yes there is a case for the union, but without Scotland, the treasury would find itself with a lot less cash coming in. This could happen within the next two years but is not being addressed in any shape or form.

I just took a look at other interesting figures on that site.

"The Scottish government publishes their own data on Scotland's public finances. This shows the gap between what is raised and spent in Scotland, which in 2007/8 working out as £45.2 billion public finances raised in Scotland and £53.3 billion spent, a deficit of £8.1 billion. However, they also calculate revenue from North Sea oil, which it argues would on geographical grounds contribute £7.32 billion annually to an independent Scottish government. "

So it appears that, even if North Sea oil was 100% allocated to Scotland, then it would still be spending more than it raises. Of course, this is before Salmond starts any big spending sprees (which of course he can totally afford).

To my eye, that looks as though if Scotland bugger off, then far from "without Scotland, the treasury would find itself with a lot less cash coming in", instead a loss-making unit would be hived off and the balance books would improve.

Did that convention explicity mention Scotland as owner of the oil?

I went to Scotland to re-enact the battle of Bannockburn at Bannockburn monument.

We had to contend with morons telling us we were wrong because they had seen what happened in Braveheart (yes, honestly people said this).

Some Scottish ****tard tried to get on the battlefield and fight with the Scots against us with a machete but luckily he was spotted by the marshals.

As I was leaving the field I was stopped by a Scot who was pissed out of his head at 2pm and demanded to know whether I was English or Scottish. He was stumped when I said I was Welsh. He demanded to know why I fought for the English, I explained we were asked to to balance the sides so he told me which clan he was from and asked if I knew what it meant. I had no idea. Eventually some gigantic Scot re-enactor took the pint of beer out of his hand, necked it and handed back the empty glass. There was a pause and then the drunk became much more friendly.

The next year we went someone tried to jump us in the town but was too pissed and was unable to effectively stand let alone assault me. We got ripped off in the local pub when they insisted we had asked for one more meal than we had people. The very busy pub turned quiet and we decided simply to pay and explain that the 6 of us would eat somewhere else for the next two days so he had lost far more money that he conned us out of.

The next year they wanted to hold the show on the same day as a Nationalist Scottish march to the monument - Feck that! The English re-enactors were woken in the middle of the night to find a large burning English flag in their camp.

Overall, we have declined requests to go back.

I do like how you picked one year out of 40, at the time of the credit crises to support your argument. Especially considering the hefty surpluses throughout the past 40 years.

Well if we're to manage such a small deficit in such unprecedented times, I say good on us!

Well, 'battle' is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration; according to the earliest known image of the 'battle', only about 20 people turned up and it was just a pub brawl gone wrong, rather like Glasgow on a Friday night.

Actually, I didn't. I took the figures given by the website that you recommended for this type of information. HTH.

The rest of the page containing those figures goes into more detail, but basically the reason "you" (how you include yourself in this I don't know) managed such a small deficit is because of the amount of money flowing from the rest of the UK. Like I said before, when this loss-making unit of the UK is hived off then the balance books will improve.

There were many more year to choose from in my link. You picked the worst. I doubt very much an independent Scotland would be beginning with a empty account at the start of every fiscal year, as you're argument would suggest.

If Scotland is so great, why are you in Germany?
