Because you are being trusted to help someone that is non technical make a very large financial purchase.
It has nothing to do with your own pathological hatred of any brand. Your brain should be asking what products will be safe for your girlfriend to use without dangers of malware and easy operation. If you can't make an objective decision regardless of the outcome you should send her off to make the decision for herself. Having been the PC support department for a seriously extended family of non technical people: until recently on average I had the pleasure of rebuilding at least 6 laptops in any given year because some dumbass has sent the user the latest virus coz the picture was funny. FUD techniques have more or less rendered most antivirus software and Trojan scanners useless.

What I have found is that as I have moved them away from PCs my time spent rebuilding their systems has decreased.

£800 + might sound loads of cash for a mac air but if you add the cost of the time you will spend rebuilding the PC to the windows equivalent price you might get a better like for like average.

If the user is competent and able to understand operating systems then a windows PC is fine. For everyone else a mac is better.

I disagree, converging an operating system for games console & entertainment system, PC, tablet & phone is going to be a massive undertaking and challenging but it is one that will eventually pay off. I expect windows to be the dominant technology by the end of next year.

Don't get me wrong Bob, I resect your opinion and if you're a 'spud' we may at least have something in common ...lol. You do raise valid virus issues and although she currently runs MBAM, SAS & Spybot often, we still get a few issues. However, let me make a few points:

                    1. I won't be helping her make make a purchase, I will buy it as a present
                    2. It probably won't be 'very large' unless we buy apple
                    3. I may hate apple but I do admire them. I really didn't want this to degenerate into an 'anything but apple' debate
                    4. She won't go out and make the decision herself. She can't be bothered, she just wants to do the things above
                    5. As the post above says, £800 is a lot of money to do a bit of websurfing.

PS...lovehoney is something she really does know about
