I did not go to public school but I have several friends who did (some from home, some from university). They have done no better than I have in terms of career and wealth. They seem to have many more tales of fellow classmates who failed or ended up taking drugs or getting into trouble with the law. This seems to be mainly because the parents think by sending the kids to public school they can wash their hands of them, simply drop them off at the door and pick them up when they churn out the other side of the machine. Maybe having conscientious parents is more important than the school itself.
The only common thing they have is a code of morals drilled into them, but then so do I and I don't think it differs very much. So in short, if you live in a bad area (why?) then maybe it is worth it. But if the local schools are OK sending them to the local comprehensive or the local public school will probably have little influence on the end product, at least a lot less than the effect of the parents.
