I personally can't see the point in having children if you are going to go and pay somebody else to bring them up. I was forced into contracting so we could afford to live off one income. I can see why those on permie incomes are effectively forced back into work though, IMO those families with a contractor income of 300/day+ (based on 20 days billing) can survive comfortably until the kids are older and the mum can go back to work.

Not all career structures support this. Our little ones are in childcare 3 days per week as if Mrs OG leaves her academic career, there is no route back into it.Originally posted by NorthWestPerm2Contr View PostI personally can't see the point in having children if you are going to go and pay somebody else to bring them up. We do however still see the point of having children, which is just as well really.Comment

Though I agree somewhat with your point, things aren't always that easy and straightforward a multitude of things can happen for one we've seen wages depressed for years while utility bills and fuel has gone up. Can you honestly say you're able to factor all these things in when planning to have a child and thinking about the financial consequences? In Scooter we trust

I heard a soundbite on the radio that it would be funded by taxing the banks more.Originally posted by fullyautomatix View PostNew Labour up to its tricks again. When they were in power the master plan was to give away lots of dosh for people to breed and now it seems they want to take advantage of that breeding and offer free child care. Where is the money coming from ? Each one of their policy seems to center around giving away this and that with no real explanation on how they will fund it.
When are they going to tell the country's population to go and work hard and earn a decent days wages and fund their life style ? If you cannot afford child care then dont have children. Simple as that.
It's like they've just picked 2 areas that sound really good to Joe Public (free child care, taxing banks), and smashed them together into a policy.
Bit like most policies I guess.

The coalition will be panicking about the free school meals initiative in a little bit, when they realise that it ends up in a massive cut in income to schools which get pupil premium money.Originally posted by eek View PostThat's merely unintended consequences due to look of foresight (sorry thinking through consequences).
I reckon its just a panic move from Labour after the free school meal initiative (which was kept very quiet).....Comment
