    Yes.

Also I think Im correct in saying that Plato started civilisation as he was the first human being on the planet as verified in the Old Testicle.

So hes got a lot to answer for.

Actually I think even more fundemental issues like education need to be tackled before we start looking at incentives (I would think the best incentive would be not to starve).

Not starving is a great incentive, but doesn't necesarrily lead to the promised land. I don't know of any country in the world at any time in history where the lack of some form of welfare (i.e. the threat of starvation) didn't lead to many more negative things in that society than the ones we're complaining about ...

There are alot of much needed "worker" jobs that do not require an education for (the ones the government insist that immigrants are required because people have moved on with their education and wouldn't want these types of jobs).

Like the prison system where people are paid token salaries to do jobs that help company margins, what about getting people on welfare doing these types of jobs, so they "earn" their welfare and support the businesses.

          It may even inspire some.

If there's a job like, oh, I don't know, say a road-sweeper, then someone on welfare should do this job to earn their welfare rather than let that person sit and watch tv all day and give him money for nothing and bring in an east-european to do the job for a low wage?
            Nah, it'll never work.
            Why not?

True and I was being slightly tongue in cheek but it seems that our current society is one that thrives on instant gratifcation rather than one of respect for achievement built out of nothing.

The best incentive to get work is one of starvation. And thinking of this further it has only been a couple of hundred years since 'we' decided that to allow people to starve is not a good thing (after the Irish famine). So we do have a track record of letting people starve but luckily we are no longer that barbaric.

I now fully expect someone to come along and disprove me! LOL

That dangerous notion smacks of communism DG.

The poor chap stuck at home through no fault of his own should be granted a plasma TV gratis from the State to help his suffering, the road sweeper should have tax free earnings to help his relocation costs.

We need to work harder to earn more taxes to fund the social utopia.

                    Perfect.
