Of course you can. The deciding factor is really whether the player wants to go or the club wants rid of them. Ronaldo to Madrid was inevitable because the player wanted to go. If Ronaldo had actually wanted to stay at Man U they'd have kept him. As it was they had no choice but to hold out for the best price.

I don't think Suarez leaving is likely after this season, that might change if next year is a disaster. I don't think City would part with Yaya Toure either.

Man U are one of the richest clubs in the world by revenue and well aware that you don't win the CL by selling your superstar players. They would have kept him if he hadn't wanted to go, I've no doubt about that, because there was no way they could replace him at any cost and they lost CL revenue for years by doing less well. They made the final two years running and won it once with him, and 2011 aside have struggled to get past the last eight since, so it's probably cost them half of that £80 million over the last 5 years to be without him.

You are having a laugh right? Ronaldo is now the biggest football superstar on earth (ahead of Messi now as well). Shirt sales, sponsorships, advertisement deals, CL football would all more than cover that £80 Million. They were just making the best of a bad situation by selling him for that amount.

Because Liverpool are also a big club by revenue, albeit not currently in the top 10 that's largely to do with not having CL football for several years. They don't need the money, even at £70 million it's only a £40 million profit and they will make more than that with two or three years of continuous CL football and the boost to shirt sales etc that brings. He'll only be sold if he wants to go, and I think that situation got sorted out last year.

Ronaldo was always pretty clear that his boyhood team was RM and that one day he would love to play for them. Once they came knocking then it was obvious what would happen. As a United supporter I have no problem with that. The same cannot be said for Rooney when he wanted to move to City or Chelsea or Beckham moving to RM. If I were in the same position as Ronaldo, if I were playing for any club and United came in for me, then I'd probably make the same decision. Obviously it helps when your boy hood club is one of the greats rather than say Crewe.
