I'm seriously thinking of getting a walking stick

First thought about it when I had really bad gout last December, then forgot about it when the gout had gone. I might go for it this time.

As others have said, rest, ice, compression, elevation. Load up on Ibuprofen and keep taking it regularly - that's important.

Generally if you'd broken an extremity, you'd know for sure (I know there's exceptions, but generally speaking).

Just over two weeks ago I was coming in from the garden when the missus told me to take my muddy shoes off as she'd just washed the floor. I did as I was told and then walked straight into the island in the kitchen breaking the second joint in my middle toe. Knew it was broken straight away (mainly because it was flopping about and I was writhing on the floor in pain). Went to hospital, had it x-rayed, they strapped it up and sent me home. I'm hobbling along and still can't do my shoes up. The missus still won't assume responsibility btw.
...my quagmire of greed....my cesspit of laziness and unfairness....all I am doing is sticking two fingers up at nurses, doctors and other hard working employed professionals...

RICE is good. Suggest you have it with a biriyani, it's a bit bland on its own.

IMO, you're nuts if you go to the interview. Inability to walk is hardly likely to make a positive impression. Phone them and see if you can VC it. And get yourself down the quack to get checked out - or A&E who will be able to get you a set of crutches.

Immediately there was a loud crack and a shooting pain in my left calf

I didn't make it to the end of the path. Tried, but after a couple of steps I had to stop, as it seemed unlikely I'd be able to get across the road. I shambled back up to the flat where I've got my leg up. I can manage to shuffle about in here, if I'm careful. Going sideways is best. But if I get my leg into the wrong configuration, the pain shooting through it makes my whole body twist

Best of all, I've got an interview eighty miles away tomorrow. I'll take the automatic so driving should be OK, but I've no idea yet if I'll be able to actually make it out to the car in the first place, or from the car to Reception at the other end
I'm afraid you described an achilles tendon tear.

          Loud crack - check
          Agony - check
          Shuffling sideways - check
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

as other have said ice, rest etc...

mrs 5* had a similar thing whilst out running and within 24/36 hours there was bruising all around the calf. We sent her to a sports physio and after a couple of weeks she was able to walk up/down the stairs without too much pain.

This - proper rehab is key to fixing soft tissue injuries.

I spent a couple of years rolling my ankle until I got some proper rehab - hasn't gone in the 10 years since.
