    You're right about that

For once you are right. Unlike you, my views are not glib, shallow or received. I have actually thought about it. When I was younger I read quite a lot of the Bible and concluded (as any intelligent person must) that while an excellent work of literature, it is not an adequate explanation of our presence on this earth, the existence of God or anything else for that matter.

      Re: Wrong again

To make it easy on those of you who garner your thoughts from fundamentalist Christian websites - I will point you to this excellent book from Sam Harris - "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the future of Reason". Read more here.

        You admire chico

        for his beliefs?
But every one of us on this board has beliefs.

"The silly people here question his beliefs as though that would somehow cause him to renounce his faith"

Actually we wouldn't question his beliefs (or at least I wouldn't) if he didn't keep posting his evangelical tulipe.
        He is perfectly entitled to believe anything he likes, but if he spouts all this biblical bilge he should (reasonably) expect to have to defend it. He may swallow anything his preacher tells him but we don't have to. If chicken doesn't want to defend his christianity then he shouldn't keep shouting about it.;

            Americans and Religion

According to Gallup, 35 percent of Americans believe that the Bible is the literal and inerrant word of the Creator of the universe. Another 48 percent believe that it is the “inspired” word of the same—still inerrant, though certain of its passages must be interpreted symbolically before their truth can be brought to light. Only 17 percent of us remain to doubt that a personal God, in his infinite wisdom, is likely to have authored this text—or, for that matter, to have created the earth with its 250,000 species of beetles. Some 46 percent of Americans take a literalist view of creation (40 percent believe that God has guided creation over the course of millions of years). This means that 120 million of us place the big bang 2,500 years after the Babylonians and Sumerians learned to brew beer. If our polls are to be trusted, nearly 230 million Americans believe that a book showing neither unity of style nor internal consistency was authored by an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent deity.

              Atheism is not viable

There is no question that has been put to me here that any Christian has not asked themselves before (including myself). The problem with atheists is that they presume to know it all. They say they are intelligent - but they are not intelligent enough to realise that they hold bigoted views. They claim they know it all when they clearly do not. The atheist is essentially filled with pride. As we all know - pride leadeth to a fall.

These so called "intelligent atheists" keep quoting the Bible out of context and imply that it is riddled with inconsistencies. It is not. The more they do this - the more they expose themselves as a bunch of intellectual deficients. Pick a verse here, pick a verse there and hopefully it will prove their weak arguments.

If you know that this universe evolved out of a incoherent mish mash of random nothings all converging in one space time continuum then good luck to you. You will need it.

Atheism was not viable yesterday, is not viable today and will not be viable tomorrow.

                      Vote now

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, Chico has rested his case. On the basis of the evidence provided, how do you vote?

                      1. Do you think that Atheism is a tenable intellectual position?
                      2. The Bible is not a literal, true, descriptive or prescriptive document?

I vote Yes to both the above statements.
