Hate to stand up for totalitarian regimes but the one advantage they do have is the ability to plan long-term for the good of the country.(unfortunately this can have a bleak impact on various individuals - oh, well).
Over here we constantly lurch along thinking incredibly short-term due to the desire to get elected/re-elected. Saw a programme about ex-chancellors and they mostly said there is a constant stream of people wanting more money for this and that, with of course NO-ONE saying they needed less next year.
This entirely perverts the decisions that are made which are mainly taken to appease the most people possible.
This results in money spent today, which is stolen from people in the future who will have to pay it back (same as you going into debt, spending money now and paying later OR saving in an ISA/Pension to do it the other way round).
There are no solutions apart from try to pullback when the appetite exists (NOW !) or print more money to encourage inflation to get the debt to disappear.
Interestingly, there are other ways, witness the Norway Sovereign Fund. Knowing oil wont last forever, they decided to stash a decent chunk in a Sovereign fund invested all over the world for the continuing benefit of future generations. This is now worth trillions. Other oil-rich arab states are doing the same (mostly as they have virtually NO other way to generate GDP)
UK - Entire revenue stream pissed into the black hole of govnmt spending....
Yes - I accept that the Norweigan economy is totally different to ours but even a small proportion of revenue stashed for a rainy day would smooth the path a bit.Comment
