I've just been listening to a Polish housekeeper at my B&B explaining Romanians.

They love clothes and looking good. They don't go to Church to pray, they go to look at everyone's outfits to make sure that they look the best. They only care about status and that someone else looks cheap.

It doesn't matter if they don't have a roof over their heads provided they have a good hairstyle.

When a boy turns 18 he HAS to have a car, and it can't be any old car but the biggest and most expensive he can get his hands on, even if he can't afford the petrol to put in it.

Sounds like a lot of people I encountered in the Valleys, it's very much about keeping up appearances. I travelled home from Caerphilly by bus and had the misfortune of hearing a conversation that a woman was having with her friend. Basically they were on about her son's friends birthday party and she was explaining that she'd taken her son to the hairdresser's to have what I could only describe as the latest boy bad haircut which included highlights and fake tan, very OTT considering he was 9.

Sadly the majority of Romanians that I come into contact with are Roma gypsies, even the Romanian carpenter across the road hates them, with good cause IMHO.

I suppose that does suggest one plus side of the absurd multicultural concept. When every single nation contains similar quantities of all the minorities we most dislike, we will all hate each other equally. Truly an advance towards a united world!

May be if my experience of them wasn't that of a crooked thieving corrupt sub-group then I wouldn't think this, but that is my experience, so I do.

Believe me I get on with anyone, but I would like to be treated the way I would treat them, not have stuff stolen from my garden, builders vans broken into while they are working in my house and fly tipping around the area.

I wasn't getting at you, just my sarcastic philosophy. No personal experience of the Roma but I doubt that the negative things we read are all that innacurate, particularly when much of it comes from reputable sources all over Europe.

In reality, very few "predudices" are totally without foundation.

I do wonder why more people do not live with realities. Like this quote in that BBC link:

How is "people that exploit their children and women for stealing for begging" and "beg and steal because that's the only chance that they have for surviving" any different for the victims? It is a given that, if the Roma were a successful people, they would not commit these crimes but the more relevant fact is that, as they are not Italians, it is not the duty of Italians to solve their problems.
