Back in early contracting days I was offered a very well paying permie job in Slough but couldn't face the place.

And I struck lucky by not buying a place there. I could have easily ended up in a negative equity situation.

Shudders at the thought of being trapped in Slough with a negative equity home...

You would have been a landlord and if you had a garden or a garage - you could have done this

It's usually quoted as humour but ISTM that it gets better, and less funny, every time I read it.

I didn't really mean Slough in particular, but dehumanised working and living environments in general.
