For as long as I have been contracting I have seen the same job advertised for what some would consider to be a prestigious client, lets say they are a Big Broadcasting Client in White City, now the reason why this catches my eye every time is they are asking for a very niche skill which does actually compliment my existing set but without experience its a bit of a non starter even if I tick every other box as they are adamant they use this niche technology.

Has anyone managed to skill up in their down time and blag their way to a niche product using the knowledge they already know from similar skills to talk the talk?

What sort of skill is it? I.e a tool like JIRA/Confluence for team working, or a full dev tool like Talend but not that many people use? That would make the difference to me. I wouldn't go away and learn a new dev tool for a job, but I'd go and read up on say how to set up Oracle App express. Likewise reading up on third party libraries to include in your dev environment is a lot less work than changing from developing on .net to objective c.

PS White City is an interesting place to work and you can get on the 1 show if you hang around in the courtyard. ;-) Plus, your pass will get you into TV Centre and you can do your own unguided tour of the studios or do lunch with the stars. Definite must do on the 'gigs list' if you get chance. Up at the white city building you might even spot Jezza having a fag or a bloke turn up in a Rolls with the number plate AMS1.
