            It's not an urban myth, but regardless they don't use them in Smarties anymore which is why they are such drab colours now. Skittles too IIRC... whereas American sweets are sickening colourful.

                This is the rule of thumb I have always gone on

                On going stale, a Jaffa cake goes hard like a cake rather than soft like a biscuit.
