A very tough year though ...
In previous years, when 3rd and 2nd were announced, the winner could often be deduced with a ~99% certainty.

Not this year though, I was thinking, oh Farah or Wiggins...

In all honesty, despite all his triumphs this year, I'd still have given Wiggins the edge, mainly for the TdF win.

But he only had limited success which was mainly due to Rafael Nadal being injured all season.

          How is this relevant?

Sport's pretty simple; you train, prepare, turn up for competition and if you beat the other people that turn up then you've won. Speculation and armchair hypotheses are of no consequence whatsoever.

And by the end of any knock-out competition you would expect only the best to be the last two standing ...rather than an old bloke a bit past his prime and some journeyman

              Like this year's Wimbledon finalists?

Right result. Shame that Murray would have been have been a shoe-in most other years.

Like this years US Open final?

This reminds me of that "Contador is the class of this field" comment from someone about the Tour de France, when Contador wasn't even in the field.

That bloke who didn't turn up would have won.

That would make me the greatest tennis player in history even though I can't even hold a tennis bat properly.

Would he have been if Nadal was playing though?
