My friends would probably call me semi retired, I take extended breaks between contracts for usually longer than the contracts are, I possibly could retire as I have a good wedge and thanks to Labour my gf prints money but I worry that I should really by making hay during this period of life when I can get good work.

I have never found a problem with dealing with the time on offer, always have something to do. I do think the lack people to talk to gets to you when everyone is working 9-5. Maybe I should befriend some of the oiks from the local scheme.

      Friends: don't have, don't want.
Family: other side of the world, mostly, except for wife and
Children: not until recently, now one, but definitely wouldn't want to look after her all day. Like her a lot, but hours at a time of doing nothing but interact with her would be torture. She's two, might be different when she's older.

That's true too. Having a nanny for the days when he's not at school is the best of 2 possible worlds: I'm always around the house so interact all day long but there's someone to take him to playgroups, singalongs or whatever they do with toddlers ....
        Hard Brexit now!

You probably don't want to know what the nanny will do with a toddler.

Hands off parenting just makes you sound overly self-absorbed and selfish whichever way you try and spin it.

Me me me, what car I'm buying myself today, what I'm studying this week, what house I'm buying for my burgeoning property portfolio now.

I think the problem is that I can be comfortable without working, its a great motivation sapper.
Have basically finished my maffs masters so that's not there any more.
Wouldn't be so bad if all my mates weren't at work during the day.
Plus there seems to be loads of low-hanging fruit in my industry.

Wait till she is a teenager. You won't want to interact with her at all!!!
