Almost all economists understand this. Even the ones that i believe are tulip and don't subscribe to.

Most of the economists i subscribe to are dead, but the living ones certainly did see it, Schiff, Ron Paul (not an economists but as good as) etc.

Protectionism is one of the most rejected economic ideas going, for reasons far too obvious to need to explain.

Thus the onus is really on the believer of protectionism to explain why it does work, much like the onus would be on a believer that the world is flat to explain why his theory is correct.
        So you can't explain.

Do you seriously believe it works?

Let's say in an effort to protect your family's interests you told your wife and kids (pretend you have them if you don't) that they could no longer trade with other people, only within family members.

Do you think you would be better off or worse off?

Doing so at a national level is no different.

Great example of the fallacy of composition.

It's not though, otherwise you'd be able to explain why it is different.

I'm not convinced you do think protectionism works and are just on a wind up.

I had no idea you were even talking about protectionism. I just made myself a little bet that you would talk same tulipe.

And lo and behind, the fallacy of composition!

                    Isn't protectionism a short-term fix that causes long-term problems?

That's what the voice in my head told me to say.

It's not a fallacy of composition. I am saying that if nations acted like a large family protectionism would have the same affect as your family not trading with anyone. I am not suggesting every family within the nation should stop trading with each other and thus the nation as a whole would be worse off (though it would be anyway). It is an analogy not composition.
