        I see what you mean, now that I try to read it back with an English accent.

        I had similar trouble in a meeting with a company that chartered yachts one time. They said they couldn't take any more than X many passengers, or they'd technically be acting as a "ferry", and would need special licences and insurance for that. I said "so, to summarise, you don't believe in ferries*?", which I realised from the blank looks of the Englishman I was speaking to did not compute in his accent, even though I'd said it in mine.
