    Guantanamo should shut, says Bush
    By Tom Baldwin

IMPRISONING terror suspects without trial at Guantanamo Bay provides ammunition to those who accuse the US of not upholding the values it encourages elsewhere, President Bush admitted yesterday.

He reiterated that his Administration wanted to close the detention camp where three inmates committed suicide this week, but added: “We’re holding some people that are darn dangerous.”

The President has faced growing pressure from other countries, including Britain, to shut down the prison at a US military base in Cuba where hundreds of suspects have been held for up to four years. He is now waiting for a Supreme Court ruling on the legality of the special military tribunals where he hopes to prosecute the inmates.

Mr Bush said: “No question Guantanamo sends a signal to some of our friends . . . my answer to them is that we are a nation of laws and rule of law. Eventually these people will have trials, and they will have counsel, and they will be represented in the court of law.”

Actually this isnt new...GW has already said on a number of occassions in the past that he would like to close Gitmo...but that all depended on what happened with terrorists being held there (mind you, if they just capped them all then Gitmo could probably close tomorrow ).

The recent more concilliatory tone on Iran and now this sends a clear signal that the Bush administration has been spooked by their recent abysmal ratings by the US electorate.

A more balanced and moderate approach could work wonders.

Can't close Guantanamo until all of the fundamentalist loonies have been relocated to various places in Europe though. For further interrogation and because they are "darn dangerous". Best to lose them in transit I reckon!

I think ATW is displaying some naivity here. When dealing with an unpopular policy, or one that is popular in some quarters, politicians will say "We are doing all we can to stop doing this". What this means is "We're gonna carry on business as usual, but hey, we would like to stop this, but hey, it's really really necessary, and so we are forced by circumstance." Blair is a past master at this form of BS. It's spin. No more. No less.

Fungus - its a remarkable change of position which clearly indicates that they DO really want to close it, but just concerned about loss of face if they do it quickly by bowing to demands from all reasonable people.

Its only a remarkable change in position if you are totally ignorant and havent been following the news recently. Thus I contend you are ignorant!
