    Ok, let me correct that. No develpment manager leading a greenfield development team using
    OO, Agile, TDD, UML etc wants to hire a jack of all trades.

      Ah, doesn't that contradict what has happened to you?

        What is the point in loading up your CV with all the technology jargon if you cannot do anything meaningful with it ?

          You are overestimating the species known as 'manager'. Yes, they are multicellular organisms, but only just.
          And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

Right now, because there aren't many contracts going and the agents and HR numpties are getting piles of CVs for every job, they're just adding more and more conditions or skills to the list to try and reduce the number of CVs coming in; they must surely know, if they have a half decent education, that that actually reduces the chance of getting an honest and competent person for the job; if you have ALL the skills you're either;

              I deduce from this that that's what hiring companies are looking for, so that's what they will get.

              It's a bit of a shame for those of us who've prided ourselves on being serious specialists in our field, but unfortunately we have to deal with idiots before we get contracts.

                But there is no such thing as greenfield development. There may be for the first few weeks but once they look in detail they discover old data that needs to be migrated, systems being replaced they don't actually understand have tentacles into 14 other systems which still need that information.....

                And that is when you bring in the jack of all trades who can solve those issues.

                  Not at all, I was hired to work on a stack that I'm happy with. I'm now being asked to move to another stack.

                    But you've also told your boss that you can't actually do the things you've listed on your CV and that, my dear, is a problem which is not doing you any favours.

                      Because that skill was spotted on your CV. Who knows, it might be that skill that saved you from receiving a DCM.
