I understand it; it's the Ryanair concept; you pay for the room and if you want anything else at all, you pay extra. Thing is, if I wanted that concept I'd book into the f**king Etap or somewhere like that, not a 4 or 5 star place.
I think here we see the hand of the management consultants that are advising the hotels how to generate more revenue out of their assets.

Room service delivery charge is a prime example. It's room service, of course you want it brought to your room.

      In a recent hotel stay

      1. Only 2 pillows that compressed to 3mm, actually may have been 1 mm each , when I put my head on them. Found out at the end of my stay that they actually pride themselves on having 5 different pillow types available. They certainly didn't advertise the fact.
      2. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. Bottle of water, end of.
      3. No plate and cutlery, they did get me some when I asked, not standard maybe, just my observations.
      4. Billion watt light bulbs in the bathroom, which I really want when I've just woken up.

It was well serviced and kept clean and tidy.

Didn't miss the Olympics as had BBC1, 2, ITV1 and 2 on the TV.

The room was compact, not such a bad thing for a single room.

Posh people don't make tea or coffee for themselves, someone else does it for them.

I suspect that you are staying in places where you are not the target consumer. Your contracting income has given you ideas above your station.

Weird! I used to stay in the budget type of B&B's \ hotels. They always give you tea bags and biscuits. In fact, Mrs BB and I went away for a couple of days to a reasonably sized B&B near Hexham and there were biscuits coffee and tea in the rooms every day.

The breakfast thing always annoys me - why they can't offer a per item price list so I just have a coffee and a slice of toast without paying the same as someone having a full english

Because that would require competent staff in the restaurant and the kitchen in the morning.

One evening, this guy walked in with a couple of chicks, they have drinks, lots of expensive ones, suddenly there is a dramatic shout, he sweeps all the glasses onto the floor, broken glass everywhere, he's on his feet then quickly storms out, the girls follow nervously.

I checked with the staff.... he hadn't paid his (large) tab. Good work. Cheap night out

Air conditioning units that even when off make a constant humming noise. I was staying in a holiday inn and the unit was in need of a service so was making continual whining noises, fan belt rubbing type thing. Reception said it wasn't possible to turn it off and no other rooms available unless i paid for an upgrade. A chair a torch to get in the false ceiling a theres a switch which says air con unit. I bet it took them weeks for their 'engineers' to find out how to turn it back on.
