I have just two rules when buying a used car.

    Consider Jap or German first.

    Never buy French or Italian.

That's a bit silly, I don't think many people covet a Toyota Corrolla as their ultimate drive. The Japs have made some really good cars over the years as well as the dull ones. Same could be said of most of the above.

I bought a French built Toyota Yaris for the kids - I've just replaced the clutch after 110000 miles -which is pretty good going

I've had 1 German and several Japanese, the Audi was a nice motor with great styling and interior but it was a vanity thing, when one of the wheel speed sensors malfunctioned and Audi wanted £800 to fix it I came to my senses.

All the Jap cars I've had do the job just as well and I don't have the niggling feeling of being taken for a ride by the dealers.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

looks like you cannot shorten Nipponese...bit like Pakistan

                  Nip
(U.S. and UK) A derogatory term for someone of Japanese descent (shortened version of Nipponese, from Japanese name for Japan, Nippon

French make excellent diesel engines, so much so that Ford used to put the Peugeot/Citroen engines in their cars.
Where they fall down is on build quality and the electrics. As a second hand car they can make a lot of sense as they have this poorer rep it's factored into the price, often resulting in a real bargain. The electrics are not as expensive to fix as some of the faults common with other cars.

I've had to spend a few quid on an Audi before, it was a lovely car but not something I'm going to do again.

I can't say that the Toyota has been any more reliable though - clutch has gone early (65000) which will be a grand or so to fix, on top of the the cam belt/waterpump change about 6 months ago which wasn't cheap.
