I did some stuff at IBM. I was chuffed when they charged me out at £1850 per day for a project at a bank.

I didn't earn even a quarter of that

I was being charged out at £200 a day plus expenses in 1981 when I was on £8000 a year.

3 days' chargeout was roughly equivalent to a month's take home pay.

And the buggers didn't give me a company car.

The twats even complained about my expenses.

Not surprisingly I was soon offered a job at a client. Nearly double the pay and a Beemer for a company car, but the experience already had me planning to go independant when the time was right.

Listen love, I had those johnnies analysed for a court case. They're all used and they've all got the old man's DNA on.

It's what we in the business call a Bute Trophy Cabinet.

My current gig is with IBM. The rate is pants but it's a nice place to work.

I hope you are a better B.A than you are at reading rate cards,

Never mind. The simple truth is that whenever a client lets one of the big firms into the door it costs them far too much for far too little. I am about to start a new gig and the first job will be getting the partners into bid for the work. None of the normal boys will be on that list...

I was hired out to Accidenture as a permie with a smaller insultancy firm, several years ago. Clientco paid Accidenture about 1200 euros a day, Accidenture paid my boss 600 and I was paid about 22k p.a. Clientco was somewhat miffed that they got me, with only a few years experience at the time but having to pretend I was one of the top testing gurus in Europe, I was rather miffed about sleeping in the tuliptiest hotel in Amsterdam. End result; I left and became a contractor. Everyone happy.

My instinct is to hate them but my experience of this is that clients are at fault andif they do their jobs it can work out well. I delivered a project with an excellent and good value piece of non-IT consultancy from inequality of the big names. Their rate card was sleep but we got our 500k worth.
