straight fire = direct fire = crew aiming

howitzer is not a direct fire weapon as it has a forward observer (little lad with sticks and a mallet that runs out into the field and nails one in every hundred paces)
Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

So, does howitzer shoot straight or not? And I dont mean exceptional circumstances like Germans had when they had to turn 88mm AA guns against tanks.

No wonder the Americans missed if they used anything I worked on.
I would imagine anything you worked on was for use in a European battle environment. Problem with places like Iraq is the air is drier and the ground softer (softer as in doesn't have much water in it)

Silly computer thingies, a slide rule would be better.

No, howitzers are generally incapable of shooting straight.

Anyways the weapon in the OP was a gun-howitzer, and would probably either bend somat or take someones head off if you tried to shoot straight.

Does anyone else agrees with this statement, or at least with the following: "howitzers are generally NOT shooting straight."

In what plane and for how long?

10 ft from the end of the barrel and yes, it's probably straight. Then Gravity, wind, air resistance, the magnus effect, the mass, muzzle velocity etc all play a part in the flight path of the projectile.

              I do hope this helps.

If you are going to be pedantic then all guns shoot straight. A howitzer just relies on gravity and other forces to make it accurate.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Shooting straight should certainly refer to the trajectory rather than immediate release because if you wrongly assume that anything shot straight within few meters is straight shooting then cruise missiles are also straight shooting, which they obviously aint.

A missile isnt actualy "shot", it leaves under its own power.

Even from submarine from underwater? Arty round also leaves with its own power by the way - you know that explosion that takes place in its shell?
