Well, any arty piece would have a person whose job is to observe and help aim on, even tank would have a commander who would tell gunner to adjust gun depending on where it hit: trajectory of a shot is the best way to classify pieces of arty since its pretty much black and white which ones shoot horisontally or in other words straight, and which ones shoot by parabola, which is not straight. The gun mentioned in this thread is clearly howitzer, thus it should not be expected to shoot straight.

To settle the argument I think you should have a game of Tanks.

              I've learnt something today.

Gravity does not apply to tank rounds.

Bullets also drop down with distance, just like tank shells - the difference is that tanks and rifles are generally shot straight or horisontally, but mortars, howitzers are very different in this respect - they are fundamentally designed NOT to shoot horisontally, but with high angle instead.

I'm saying the difference is in who is going the correcting, either the crew, direct fire, or a forward observer, indirect fire.

Your difference threaded has no relevance to title thread which is about "straight fire", where as what I am suggesting clearly answers the original question.

Ten years plus working on sims for both indirect and direct fire weapons and I obviously didn't learn a thing.

No wonder the Americans missed if they used anything I worked on.
