We migrated here in the 70's from foreign climes.

70's were great as a kid. Properly free, not expected to be anything but a kid, long summers, they seemed endless, sport every day from sun up to sun down, nothing else to do but be outside playing. I remember a couple of kids shows on that were ok, but mostly it was outside all the time. Cycling to the next town to camp and fish for a few days aged 8 or 9.

Proper winters too, if I remember correctly. Properly cold, and snowy.

Proper motorsport, great music, style a bit iffy - I remember oen brotehrs wedding so well, and the clothees were all checks and purples and wedge shoes. No Helmets on the backs of my brothers motorbikes, school dances.

I'd take my kids back to the 70's every day. I remember them fondly. But then again, the 80's were pretty cool too.

What time was the program on?

Excellent, will get it on iPlayer tonight, and set up a record. Normally swimming around that time in the week.

I'll be interested to note if you detect any political bias.

I will make a point of watching it on iplayer.

The older people that I used to drink with were pretty complimentary about the 70s.

They would tell me that while there was a lot of tulip going on, they never had to worry about money.

There was nothing much to spend it on, but they didn't have to worry about where it was coming from, which was a total contrast to the 80s.

I think aspirations were different. I remember my dad buying a 6 bed house in the West Country for £3500 in 72, with a big block of land on it. We didn't really need much else, other than a large car and TV. There weren't too many things to spend your money back then, even holidays weren't big things, not many went abroad. I think people were simply less greedy, as a rule, and defintely less conscious about the tulip they had.

Now it's all about updating to the latest version this, new TV that, cars costing a whole shed load of money, puters, games, etc, etc, etc. Back then, in the evenings, you went to the pub, watched tv, or read books...

While I agree with most of the sentiment there, the one thing that I will take issue with is that aspiring for better is not the same as being greedy.

Aspiring to be better is not a bad thing! Without that aspiration we'd all still be living in the trees.

The only reason we left the trees in the first place was because we kept falling out of the bastards!

a pint if mild was two bob
                      bitter two and three
                      lager two and six

fish and chips one and six

                      two bob = 2 shillings = 10p
two and three = 2 shillings and thruppence = 11p
two and six = half a crown = half a dollar = two shillings and six pence = 13p

                      half a crown
