Why oh why does the bloody heating always back up when there's a cold snap!!

FFS. Mrs MF started playing with the settings on the thermostat, then changed the batteries and lo and behold the heating has packed up. The radiators are on but very low and it's bloody freezing.

Any suggestions?

Do I need to bleed the radiators?

If the boiler will fire but not get the rads up to temp then it would suggest that whatever is there to call for heat - i.e. the thermostat is at fault.
To prove this - if you put the timer onto hot water- does the boiler fire and deliver hot water (don't know if its a combi or not - do you store hot water in a cylinder?)
If it does then it's definitely(ish) the room stat- outside chance that it could be a stuck three way valve depending on your system design

One way to prove for sure would be to bridge and therefore bypass the wires on the room stat - but that would need a meter and a comfort zone of messing with cables (if you do this always write down what colour cables go where so you can get back to original state

If the termostat is wireless then it may need to be re-synced with the controller on the boiler.

We've got an old style inefficient Baxi back boiler that's never gone wrong in 12 years.

Is your heating pump cold/warm/hells kitchen hot ?

If the pump is more than just a little warm, then it might have seized.

Bleeding rads only needs to take place if you have cold spots in a warm rad, so normally the top will be hot by the bottom stays cold although I one had one that was cold in the middle and warm all around...

yeah same issue with condensate freezing here last year. when they fitted it I asked about that and they said 'no never had a problem with that'. It drains inside now, what do you expect from a corgi registered plumber?
