So if the State provides food of a mediocre quality there's nothing to stop those who can afford it buying food of what they perceive to be a higher quality for themselves. In the same way, those who don't want to live in State housing can, if they can afford it, buy a better home for themselves.

I know you lot are pig ignorant when it comes to Socialism, but you should realise that this disqualifies you from discussing it. Go away and learn something, then come back when you are intellectually equipped to engage in meaningful dialogue (if you ever manage to achieve such a state).
Typical non-thinking leftie response. No wonder all countries touched by the hand of Socialists are ****ed.

The answer is 42. But what's the question?

You know what they say about assumptions!

If that was applied across all subjects then general would be bereft of posts.

I have a friend who volunteers for crisis - he says there is basically no homeless. Those who sleep on the streets have other issues.

So IMO the state does provide minimum housing & food.

          Good day to you sir.

"There's nothing about Socialism that says everybody must have the same, just that nobody should be in want."

It's called being a civilised country.

I shared an office with a tory stormtrooper of the new order for two years.

Then he discovered that we are all only one small cranial blood vessel away from total helplessness and welfare dependancy.

Nobody expects the state to back a lorryload of riches up to your door, but how we treat our less fortunate fellow citizens is an indicator of whether we are civilised or not.

Fly high, and good luck, but keep your fingers crossed that God doesn't spit in YOUR face.

              The state ?

the state doesnt have anything that it hasnt extorted with menaces. Most of those being fleeced accept it with good grace because they recognise the peace , security and civility that follow. But its corrupt right from the first premise
and thats why its foolish to base any ideal on it.

I've a friend who spends time with the homeless and he says they definitely do exist! Whether they choose to be homeless is another question.

I saw some this very morning, near Paddington station. Getting out of their cardboard boxes in a shop doorway. I thought Labour had eradicated all that.

Where does socialism provide a "civilised country"?

Democracy and county won’t get anywhere as long as we still define socialism and capitalism neither of them work in their pure form. Having said that, what is often said in the name of capitalism is in fact corporatism and monopolistic autocracy. If the free market prevails the banks should be allowed to fold, there would be free competition in transport and no restrictions of things such as taxi licenses etc.

Affordable housing should be provided by the state, but those who ultimately refuse to work should be given a single room in a block of flats in Glasgow or alternatively just gas them.
