They did some study that showed that the earlier that a civil servant retired, the sooner they died. I think it was in "The WHICH? Guide To Pensions" that I read about 12 years ago (yes I am that sad!). I think the theory is that having a job gives a person a reason to get up in the morning and stay sharp/focused (ok, public sector so maybe not that sharp!).
