360's are the new buzz word for appraisals, in my last permanent job only 6 weeks ago. I heard someone was deliberately making others look ordinary so he could set himself apart from the rest, obviously he did this in a very sly manner. He's such a brown noser

In my old permie life I was a manager to 12 people.

Therefore, twice a year, had to review 6 reviews other people had written of them (9 times out of 10 was utter bollox) and also there own personal statement which was an even bigger piece of bollox. I then was meant to read these 84 documents then write a review. Essentially the grade was already decided so the docs were fairly meaningless.

I sometimes actually did some work when reading / writing / giving reviews or taking people through dismissal.

      Don't miss that one bit!

WHS. I had to do reviews for 6 people in my team, thanks to an initiative by the new managing director, and fill out forms and a checklist for each. I put the whole lot in my draw, and they were never asked for again. Although that was partly because the MD was fired/resigned to spend more time with his family a few months later when it became pretty obvious all he really acheived in his job was pissing everybody off by making them fill out unnecessary forms.

I had a quick 3-month appraisal in my new permie job, so hopefully I'm good for the next 9-12 months before I have to fear the real thing.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

I used to love end of year appraisals when I was a permie.
It was the only time of year that my boss told me what I was supposed to have been doing. The ****.

I just appraised myself. It turns out that I'm unreliable, rude and work-shy. Fortunately, I get to keep my job anyway so I'm glad I didn't try any harder.

Best one I had was a boss who thought appraisals were just bulltulip, so said appraisal involved going down the local pub and having beers and a curry and avoiding talking about work and then telling me to write my own appraisal

I love end of year appraisals, now that I'm not a permie anymore.

It is sooooo satisfying watching all the permies being pulled in one by one and then afterwards complaining for a week to anyone who will listen "I was critisised for ...xyz".

Really it's just an excuse by the weak management for not giving a pay rise to people, but it's dressed up as "performance management" or "personal development". Utter rubbish, and totally demotivating to 95% of the permie workforce.

I think this Dilbert edition sums it up nicely:

"A life, Jimmy, you know what that is? It’s the s*** that happens while you’re waiting for moments that never come." -- Lester Freamon

Just had to give someone an honest appraisal and not a good one. I feel like a ****
