No. I'm equating domain knowledge + passion + technical experience with just the latter. Taking the java analogy - java programming is java programming whether for IB or whatever. We know that, but the client likes to hire people with the technical skills who have worked in the same area before.

Anyway, using your analogy what if Mr Investment Banker wanted IB experience + passion
+ java + kalman filter algorithms to track (observe) markets/ prices? What if he couldn't get all of those skills lumped into one person perfectly but they were all required?
