What a lot of whining from all sides. Firstly, I find it rather disingenuous to call the poppy a 'political symbol'; it isn't, it simply reminds people of the sacrifices that others have made in their name, regardless of their politics and regardless of whether people agreed with going to war. If a poppy is a political symbol, then anything could be called a political symbol, most obviously the three lions representing the coat of arms of England. Or indeed, the rose worn by the England rugby team.
However, I don't understand why the England football team should suddenly feel the need for this, having played for a long time without poppies.
But, I also find it incredibly childish that FIFA should whinge about this, and the idea that the ref should refuse to start the game, quite frankly, brings the whole game of football into disrepute. I hope that there are a few people representing FIFA and the England football team who can at least pretend to be adults for 90 minutes and put this pathetic squabble aside.
Shame on all their houses.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014
The Germans do remember their war dead, just on a different day.
I work with 3 German soldiers who understand the relevance of the poppy as explained by me. Last year all 3 purchased and wore them.
The poppy is not about triumphalism or glorifying war it is a symbol that shows we remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice (and for me that is not exclusive to OUR war dead) and a symbol of hope for the future that no more will have to.
Just saying like.
where there's chaos, there's cash !
I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong!
