My Uncle recently passed away in London and left a valuable property to Greenpeace. Rest of the family were shell-shocked.

The 'ol geezer loved all things natural and was taken in by the Greenpeace myths.

Solicitor says no point in contesting the will as Greenpeace ("greedy f****s" was the term he used) have very aggresive lawyer types to handle these situations and will be out for a full and quick "grab".

On the Paris thread I posted a link to Pubs in Paris, there you will find a pub called the Honest Lawyer .... speaking of which did you hear the one about ...

An IT engineer died and reported to the Pearly Gates.

Saint Peter checked his dossier and said, "Ah, you're an engineer – sorry mate, you're in the wrong place."

So the engineer reported to the gates of Hell, and was let in…

Quite soon the engineer became dissatisfied with the level of comfort in Hell.

He started designing and building improvements.

After a while, they had air conditioning, flush toilets, escalators…

The engineer was becoming quite a popular fellow.

One day God phoned Satan and asked with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in Hell?"

Satan replied, "Things are going great. We've got air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next. I’ve placed an order for a home porn-theatre. He’s working on it right now…"

God exploded. "What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake – he should never have gotten down there; send him up here."

Satan says, "No way José! I like having an engineer on the staff. I'm keeping him."

God says, "Send him back up here – or I'll sue."

Satan laughed diabolically (of course, as he was the Devil!), and responded, "Yeah right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

People here would do well to read up on the issue, and not rely on the nonsense spread by the Bush administration (who changed the results presented by their scientists because they did not agree with what they wanted), and other extremist groups. The key issue is the levels of CO2 and no it's not mostly non-man made. Also methane levels, as methane is a much worse greenhouse gas than CO2, and a significant source is cattle and other farm animals. Doomed by flatulant cows.

There's a reason why the vast majority of scientists are agreed on the broad issues, though not the details.

If the sea currents that warm us shut down, as could well happen, and we suffer Winters worse than Montreal, I'll say I told you so.

          .
          Yep two main reasons.

          1. If anyone disagrees with the 'commonly held view' they get torn to pieces by their peers professionally and personally and will be lucky ever to work again or even look through research/lab windows fom the outside with out getting nicked/lynched.

          and that good ole favourite

          2. Money.

Bush and whoever may spew non-facts or lies about GW but the apparent 'good guys' don't behave like good guys so its tough to believe anything they say.

Didn't people once get flayed alive for believing or suggesting that the world wasn't flat? at the time it didn't matter whether they were right or wrong what mattered was the behaviour of the people doing the flaying????

In the 1970's all the scientists were predicting the next ice age.

Global cooling is a theory positing an overall cooling of the Earth and perhaps the commencement of glaciation. It gained temporary popular attention due to press reporting following a better understanding of ice age cycles and a temporary downward trend of temperatures in the 1970s. However, the Earth is not considered to be cooling at this time, but rather to be in a period of global warming primarily attributed to human activity.

In the 1970s there was increasing awareness that estimates of global temperatures showed cooling since 1945. The general public had little awareness about carbon dioxide's effects: at the time garbage, chemical disposal, smog, particulate pollution, and acid rain were the focus of the public concern, although Paul Ehrlich mentions the climate change from the greenhouse gases in 1968 [1]. However, not long after the awareness reached the public press in the mid-1970s the temperature trend stopped going down. Even by the early 1970s there was concern in the climatological community about carbon dioxide's effects [2], and it was known that both natural and anthropogenic effects caused variations in global climate.

Now it's man made global warming.

            WGAS.

The only warming I'm interested in is a tight pussy and the throb of me V8

              Indeed it is Vista.

You will only end up believing one person's lie, one person's hidden agenda, one person's ulterior motive, over someone else's.

Personally, I just switch off, go and chop some wood, and make a nice cup of tea on the wood-burner and settle in for the night.

It shouldn't surprise me but I do forget that this forum is by and large the preserve of a bunch of grumpy geriatric blokes, that whinge incessantly and are about as world weary as a $2 crack whore. Then I read thread's like this and come to my senses. I'm not quite ready to go searching for the black midget lesbian tree hugging collective as yet so I'll stick with it.

When it comes down to choosing sides, I'll err on the side of caution (That and majority sceintific opinion) when it comes to something as precious as the planet we live on. Especially given that we're just passing it on to future generations who'll probably look back on us with some disgust, being we're the first generation who can really say we had a fair idea of what was going on, and were in a large part contributors, and did SFA about it.

So what if it's a natural trend, it's undisputed that the rate of change is unprecedented in the earth's hostory and the most likely cause for the excelerated change is us.

Tree hugger, yeah, I'll wear that badge if you wanna pin it on me. Better than the alternative.

                  Dear Snaw,

Fair plays to you, you tell it like it is. It's nice to see someone fired up with the vigour of youth and ready to take on the world.

Why is why I shall be expecting to read in next month's Readers Digest how you personally saved the planet.

Keep up the good work !

/pours GV a congratulatory shot of whiskey, after seeing off snaw and his idealistic claptrap.

Personally I'd set the dogs on him.

Yeah, that's the sort of reasonable, level headed approach I'd expect in these parts

Trying to figure out how it's idealistic claptrap. I don't recall offering my vision of Utopia, just stating that while there may be room for arguement on causes, the consequences are far too serious to be anything but ultra cautious.
