I have several external drive caddies I bought to allow easy connection of old hard drives as external storage. Very handy as you say.

Though this has little relevance to the problem of installing XP over the top of a non-co-operating OS if you can't boot off the XP CD and don't want to try a boot floppy. Formatting the drive may just add to the problem.

PAH thank you for summarising the problem and confirming that these bullsh!tters who mascarade as MicroShaft experts infact have no clue how to solve real world problems.

Why can't you boot from the cd? Have you looked for a bios update?

Follow these clowns and not only will you have a blank hard drive that you can't do anything with, but also a bricked motherboard.

I think their plan B involves selling new PCs to mugs that have trashed their previously working kit.

I've never bricked a mobo updating the bios. Done a few desoldering things in the days before bga though.

yes, it's so funny isn't it

they all mascarade as successfully fully certified MSDN contractors and yet ask them a simple question and they know less than my 6yr old daughter

                  I especially liked Dim's response.

                  Class.

                  Thanks PAH, I owe you.

                    Got a problem at home.

Got an old laptop which has been used as a self training machine and has Windows Server 2003 installed.

Now I want to install Windows XP Pro on there.

When I try to it tells me to get stuffed and that you cannot install XP Pro over the top of Server 2003.

Experts, what can I do to get rid of the Server 2003 and install the XP Pro on there ?

                    Thanks,

                    Milan.

I don’t work with Windows as is the same same with many other contractors.

Your problem description was utter tulip because you did not state all the facts. Your six year old daughter could write a better description.

                      Paddy,

I don't know which part of stating all the facts you missed...
