    Tricky with subsidies involved that even make solar voltaics look competitive, assuming the subsidies last. Not sure if heat pumps are included in subsidies currently, and if not why not? David MacKay is a fan, and is advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, so if not subsidised currently things may change on that front. And dump the solar voltaic subsidy, which is just a big wheeze for chancers.

        Sadly the laws of thermodynamics only allows conversion of high grade energy (electrical) into lower grade (heat) energy with > 100% efficiency. Plus a place to steal the heat from. It's sort of like using energy to walk in to the garden to pick up some hot stones and putting them in the house until they cool down, then using a bit more energy putting them back in the garden when they've cooled down. Hopefully using less energy that it would have taken to heat indoor stones by rubbing them between your thighs.

            Some principle if using piezoelectric lighter to light a gas stove. The gas only burns at 100% efficiency though, maximum.

            It turns out that you could instead have used the energy in that gas to create more heat energy than calorific energy content of the gas:

            Let me spell this out. Heat pumps are superior in efficiency to condensing boilers, even if the heat pumps are powered by electricity from a power station burning natural gas.
