Wilkinson is another Rob Andrew he does'nt stand flat on the gainline feeding flat passes to ball carriers and his out of hand kicking is poor (to be honest it always has been). He is only these days effective when he is kicking goals- which he is'nt doing at the moment. Oh yes he tackles well. England do not need him.

Woodward was unpopular amongst many players but he had a certain talent that became very effective for England. Carling has never put his hand up which means that either he doesnt want it or he has nothing to offer.
I think perhaps he's content with what he's doing. Woodward turned out to be an outstanding people manager, something where I think MJ still has a lot to learn.

          WHS

I didn't think he was actually that popular when he was playing.

He didn't look in good shape when he was subbed so wouldn't be surprised if his shoulder doesn't recover well enough.
I hope he can play. He's a nice bit of eye candy and I do think that he won't have another "off" day when it comes to kicking.

I think he may simply be a great people manager because he is a very good delegator

You don't always need to be flat on the gainline. You need the centres hitting the defence at speed, and every time England try to play flat they fail, too busy catching the ball to make the impact or the sidestep; they're at their best when they take a yard or so of depth and bring in full back and centres on varied lines. Trouble is, in 2003 we had Will Greenwood, who was a genius when it came to choosing a good running line. Tindall, for all his undoubted strengths, isn't.

He never stands flat on the gain line, and the closer you can play to it the less momentum opposition backs have to line up and close down attackers.

Popularity isn't the point. He got results and he won the backing of a team that contained some of the greatest players ever to wear an England shirt; that was proven after the '57 old farts' remark, when the RFU sacked him from the captaincy and the whole team refused to play without him.
