Great idea peabrain, because chopper pilots get a real stiffy at the prospect of descending into swirling black clouds of burning aviation fuel.

I wonder whether some DIY skills might have made a difference here. Do they teach you how to make a DIY parachutes in the army?

I wonder if it would be possible to make one and the amount of material required to land in one piece (its area could be calculated roughly), and the number and placement of strands of cord needed for canopy stability. Requirements might be quite loose here, who knows. A DIY jobbie would at least be better than jumping sans parachute.

No no no no!! The only people in the Army that are stupid enough to jump out of perfectly good planes are not bright enough to fashion their own parachutes I'm afraid.
Besides, the average sort of Cantor Fitzgerald broker likely to be working at the top of the tower, would have been a big old unit after years of troughing on expenses.
Even if they had the cojones to contemplate making their maiden basejump from the roof of the WTC, they would have needed more parachutes than an Apollo capsule to slow their descent enough for them not to end up waist deep in the tarmac.

Ah, probably true. In fact empirically true, and maybe true for anyone when faced with death. I've heard it said that one must practise ahead of time for life and death decisions because the mind can go to mush just when its at its most wanted, a frame of mind ensues more suited to running away at high speed or fighting something ferocious. Or perhaps even just for jumping.

But nevertheless, your army friends might have had a head start from the days when they made parachutes for their actionmen. Who didn't? Or should I say their one-armed, no-legged, loose-headed actionmen
