MX-5 for daily commute?

I don't have link to the hot hatch shootout review that put the MX-5 as a wildcard, and basically said, compared to a similar priced hot hatch the car felt slow and unispiring. MX-5 was great compared to a tulipty MG TF or similar, but compared to a modern hatch it is slow, noisy, cramped.

My personal view is unless you are a woman or a young androgynous lad, you will look a total pr1ck in one and blokes in a diesel astra will piss all over you on an A road and motorway as they laugh at your puny speed.

Still, if it's YOUR thing, what the heck!

So, you read it somewhere and you have no first hand knowledge of that which you speak but you thought you'd comment anyway.

No problem.

Without first hand knowledge, but just by looking at the facts I can see that the MX-5 is:

Slow
Not very nice to look at
Cramped
Impractical
Noisy
Very effeminate

Apart from that, it's a cracking motor!

I like super powerful, comfortable, luxurious, prestigious, crushingly fast cars. Something you have never known anything about.

Not my sort of car. I can put up with a 2-seater sports car but it would have to have neck snapping acceleration to give a buzz. An Elise, a VX-220 Turbo, Z4M, S2000 tick those boxes. A wheezy 1.6 or 1.8 four cylinder engine doesn't do it for me. A modern Astra Diesel will leave you at the lights.

What's the point of it?

Does it look like a Lamborghini? No
Can it whoop some automotive ass? No
Can it carry some people somewhere? No
Is it luxurious and comfortable? No
Can it save the world from CO2? No
Is it good on the motorway? No

Just a left over car built to compete with dire 1990's cars like the MG TF.

It's not even that good a car. A motoring magazine did a comparison of warm hatches (Suzuki Swift, Clio, Corsa, etc) on a race track and threw in a similarly priced new MX-5 as a comparison. MX-5 was last on the lap times, because it is so slow and doesn't handle as well a good front drive hatch.

MX-5 is overrated and very slow. A diesel Mondeo will see you off on a country road.

So it's is cramped, no luggage space, noisy, very slow and looks very girly. Don't see the appeal myself.

You are completely missing the point of the MX-5 there. It is so much fun because it is rear wheel drive.

I had quite a few rear wheel drive cars and they aren't as fun as a well sorted hot hatch. Sideways on a public road is not fun it classed as dangerous driving if a copper sees you and they will!

Capris and BMWs? Yes I had the sideways experience with both about 30 years ago.

Admit it. You've never driven an MX-5 on a twisty country road, have you?

Probably not a Morris Minor either. They were great fun in their day.
