You're not a proper contractor unless you have been finished on the spot on Friday afternoon.
Then tried to claim dole, only to be told "come back when the company bank account is empty", even though you have explained to them that it is all Corporation Tax :-)

Does that make sense on your planet?

            Tape changer alert

If you were a proper contractor you would have a warchest that would allow you to lie on a beach until your next role arrived.

And unless you had just lashed out the deposit on a new house rent, just paid 6 month's rent up-front (because you're a contractor), just come back from a card-maxing holiday, and just paid your VAT.

Murphy knows exactly when to strike :-)

You need to get better at planning mate, otherwise you will not last long in this game.

School boy error: no cash flow. NEVER spend your warchest on a holiday.

Yep, agreed. Got by for 25 years, then screwed up big time.

Everybody makes mistakes, but biggest mistake was having it happen in West Cumbria, the contractor's graveyard.
