      I imagine going on the rampage and causing mayhem is damned good fun - a real adrenalin rush with the bonus of free stuff. Easy to get caught up in it if you're from the sort of background where people don't give a tulip about consequences.

        Radio 4 had a couple of crafty interviews with perpetrators this morning. Don't know the circumstances.

        They freely admitted they just wanted "stuff", and some fun, and even if they were caught the prisons were full so no-one can do "nuffin" to them.

        So, I'd say a big reason is the lack of deterent to youths who haven't got a criminal concience.

            Listening to some of them talk, about the chances of getting caught, the likely punishment, versus the loot and the street cred, it was like listening to economics, in a funny way. The cost of crime. Like the cheaper it becomes, the more of it there will be
