SCOTLAND is top of the class when it comes to pupils studying science and maths.

According to a Royal Society report, more children in Scotland sat post-compulsory exams in physics, chemistry, biology and maths than in the rest of the UK.

In 2007, 12% of 16-year-olds sat higher physics. This compared with 3.6% of 17-year-olds studying the subject at A-level in England, 4.8% in Northern Ireland and 2.8% in Wales.

The same year, the number of young people in Scottish schools taking higher maths was 28%. In England, 8.1% of pupils studied the subject at A-level.

Statistics released yesterday showed that 43 per cent of the 148,000 employment and support allowance (ESA) claimants in Scotland were capable of working, compared with 39 per cent of claimants in the UK as a whole.
