I was speaking with someone about two weeks ago about just this. The Revenue reckoned he owed them £30K. He hired some very expensive accountant, and he ended up getting £40K back!.

That's all very well, but it's really annoying when you go that route and the expensive accountant just says... nah, you're fooked.

No, then you upgrade to a really fooking expensive accountant. There is no such thing as "you're fooked", you just don't have the right accountant.
