That's right AtW a real man doesn't need Satnav. Satnav is for birds or puffs, and/or those who don't know their left form their right. Man should need no more than a quick glance of the map and leave the rest to his superior orientational skills.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Does anyone know of a sililar device that is a) usable while cycling and b) covers footpaths, bridleways, byways etc?

Looking for summat I can use when I go out into the wilds on the bike so I know where I am going and when I stack it into a tree or a boulder and knacker myself I can tell them where I am to come rescue me

Someone mentioned this above. What you need is an iPaq or similar with a slot in or bluetooth antenna. Not sure it will show you footpaths, but will give you a GPS position when dialing the emergency services. This is the set up I use. The Tom Tom City software allows you to select walking as a mode of transport.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

you can also get various bits of software that'll let you scan a map in as a piccie and 'overlay' a lat/long grid such that your gps will tell you were you are relative to the piccie ... might work better for cycling and such ... a friend had some software that allowed him to see the proposed elevation along the route etc too ... something like this:

                  thanks for the feedback,

and now for the good news,

got it for the bargain price of 349.99 Euros at Lidl this morning, and including the Western European maps cd's.

Seems like the price is reasonable when I check the prices on Amazon and totalpda etc.

                  Milan.
