            And if it's truly a DIY casting kit, be sure NOT to use plaster of paris, as this is exothermic and you'll lose the lot if you can't chip it off in time.

                Shouldn't one first make a mould and then use that for casting the plaster?

                That would make it somewhat easier to make multiple copies as well.

                  Not sure - I thought plaster of paris was used to make the "primary" mould; but now you mention it, wax would probably be a lot better and safer.
