We shouldn't completely write off cold fusion, or something of that ilk.
Everyone scoffs that it was just a Fleisch in the Pons But a recent and highly regarded ebook on solid state physics I downloaded the other day, makes clear that many non-kook physicists in that field are fairly convinced something unusual was going on in the Fleischmann-Pons experiments and if so might be exploited once properly understood.
